Broccoli was a seldom-served vegetable during my upbringing. I tasted it for the first time at the age of 23, thanks to a flatmate who cooked and ate broccoli regularly because it is SO healthy. For several weeks, I watched with skepticism as she bought, cooked, and ate it with delight. I need to confess that the first time I tried it, I steamed it too long, making it soggy, and then spread butter on top. To my surprise, it was still pretty delicious.
Broccole is an unattractive and little-noticed vegetable who lives in a small village shop waiting for a mom with kids to buy him. The shop is the home of many other vegetables full of minerals and vitamins and who can solve math problems, dance, and climb volcanoes. The healthy characters live side by side with the not-so-healthy but very fashionable “junk food” prepared with artificial ingredients and wrapped in plastic.

“Of course, I forgot to explain to you. The Zanis (carrots), like asparagus and spinach, with their Vitamin A, are the envy of all of us. They have mile-long eyesight, which allows them to see the target better than anyone else. And if that were not enough, the Zanis mentally calculate the wind speed and can change the angle of the shot. They don’t need a calculator or any other device thanks to the phosphorus they contain. They are invincible. They are my friends”.
